Water

The US EPA, in conjunction with KDHE are requiring all Public Water Supply systems to conduct a Lead Service Line Inventory of both the public and privately owned water services within our Jurisdiction. We would like to stress to you that the City of Chanute currently and in the past has had no lead issues within our water supply levels set forth by the Lead and Copper rules. We are sending out this survey in our efforts to obtain information about the privately owned (customer side) service lines within the system. Please fill out this survey to the best of your knowledge. This information is crucial for us to complete our systems material evaluation. We greatly appreciate the members of our community that take time to participate in this important study. Along with this survey are other useful links to help you identify your plumbing types. If you chose to use the paper format, please return this survey with your utility bill payment.

For information about potential financial solutions to assist property owners with replacement of lead service lines, please contact your water system.

Distribution & Treatment

Water distribution and treatment has been a part of the Chanute’s history since 1894. In 2012, a valve dated 1922, was found during a leak repair. That valve is still working and in use. The current treatment plant was put online in 1951, and updated in 1970. A previous plant can be seen off of Highway 39 at the East River Bridge.
